Description
A robust, single-celled freshwater microalga used in aquaculture and biofuel research for its fast growth and high protein/chlorophyll content.
Key characteristics:
- Cell size: 2–10 µm (spherical)
- Doubling time: ~8–24 hours under optimal light/nutrient conditions (can be faster, ~6 hrs, in high-density photobioreactor cultures)
- Native habitat: Freshwater lakes, ponds, and soil worldwide; also found in symbiotic associations (e.g., with some protozoa)
- Optimal temperature: 25–30°C
- Optimal pH: 6.5–7.5
- Light requirement: Moderate to high intensity; photoautotrophic (can also grow mixotrophically/heterotrophically with organic carbon sources like glucose)
- Nutrient needs: Nitrogen, phosphorus, and trace minerals (commonly cultured in media like BG-11 or Bold’s Basal Medium)
- Key composition: Up to 50–60% protein by dry weight, plus chlorophyll and carotenoids
