Growing your culture
What does Spirulina need to grow?
Warm conditions (roughly 30 to 35 °C), good light, and an alkaline, mineral-rich medium. Strong direct sun can bleach the cells, so bright indirect light or a lamp works well. Our guides explain the setup step by step.
What does Chlorella need to grow?
A freshwater medium, moderate to good light and room temperature to a little above (roughly 25 to 30 °C). Use dechlorinated water and a clean, covered container. Our guides explain the setup step by step.
Can I start with a small amount and scale up?
Yes. A small starter can be grown on into a larger culture by adding it to fresh medium in stages. Always keep part of the culture back as a reserve.
How do I keep my culture clean?
Use clean, covered containers and fresh medium, and keep a reserve before every scale-up. Our contamination guide covers it in detail.
ShopAlgae cards
I found a ShopAlgae card. What is it?
ShopAlgae cards are passed from hand to hand. Tap (NFC) or scan (QR) one, add your stop to its journey, and you get a one-time 25% code for the shop (products only, not shipping). Every stop appears on that card’s map. See all editions on the cards page.
What is the QR edition?
The second edition is made by members. With a free account you can make QR cards in My cards, print them on A4 and hand them out. Each time someone logs a stop on one of yours, you earn a one-time 25% code.
How do I get my code back?
Reopen the same card page, or look under My cards in your account. Codes last 30 days and work once.
